Straightline cancels in combination with numeral cancels

in use at the sub-post offices

During the period of the numeral cancels, the sub-post offices had, in addition to the ‘Franco in box’ cancels also straightline cancels (called name cancels as well). The straightline cancel could only be used to cancel stamps if the postal item went straight to another sub-post office. The stamps had to be canceled with the straightline cancel, “which should cover the width of the stamp as much as possible”. If the letter was sent to a main post office the straight line cancel had to be applied to the front of the letter, above the address.

Between roughly 1879 and 1890 not all sub-post offices received the Franco in box cancel. During this period cancelation of the stamps  took place using the Franco as well as the straightline cancel. This is why stamps from the numeral cancel period are fairly scarce with both a straightline and numeral cancel.
